About Toscalito Tire and Automotive

Co-founders Ken and Vince were both born in San Francisco and raised in the same neighborhood before becoming business partners in 1971. Ken Toscanini and Vince Ippolito combined their skills, knowledge, enthusiasm, passion for cars, and their names (Toscanini + Ippolito) to create Toscalito Tire & Automotive.

Initially, “the two nice Italian boys” (Ken and Vince), worked together at Shell stations in the Marina and the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco. For years, their stations offered gasoline, auto repair, AAA towing, and car rental to many loyal customers. In 1975, they decided to concentrate on tire sales and auto repair by opening their first Goodyear Tire Store: Lombard Tire & Automotive. Over the years, they opened new shops closer to their homes in Marin: Corte Madera, Ignacio (Novato), Terra Linda (north San Rafael), downtown San Rafael, and then Vallejo.

Ken and Vince liked to describe Toscalito as a family business run by a family for families. They had great pride in seeing all the repeat customers – so many have chosen Toscalito for the past decades and now Toscalito is servicing their children and even grandchildren’s automobiles. Ken and Vince also have many employees that have been with them for over 35 years. As a member of their employees' extended families, Ken and Vince have lost count on the number of weddings, birthdays, christenings, and (unfortunately) funerals that they have attended over the years.

The most difficult and saddest funeral occurred on March 9, 2011, when Toscalito lost one of its founders, Ken Toscanini, after an eleven year battle with cancer. We are extremely saddened by Ken's passing, but vow to carry on his passion for quality and premium customer service.

This is why Toscalito stands out and has thrived for so long: Our staff truly cares and strives to provide car owners with the highest quality customer service, while offering a sense of family and community to customers. It's a level of service and commitment that you can trust. This is how Ken and Vince set up the business and how Vince, now carries on the tradition of delivering a positive, friendly, cost-effective experience. Toscalito is still a Goodyear Tire shop, in addition to offering many other name brands.

Toscalito has always been a proud supporter of local charities and non-profit causes. Through the years, they have supported local schools, the American Red Cross, Feed the Children, and Ambassadors of Hope and Opportunity - an organization that offers help and support to local homeless young adults. Over the past 15 years, Toscalito has been a major contributor to a local organization - that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society's restricted fund for Breast Cancer Education and Research. Giving back to the communities they serve is also part of the passion at Toscalito.

"The work was fast and efficient, and the customer service was amazing! Eli and Lee were very helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. Thank you, Toscalitos! I cannot emphasize enough how much I appreciate all the help and hard work!"
"Very knowledgeable and respectful here. Checked my brakes without asking when I got new tires Thanks."
"Great service! Leigh worked hard to give me a better deal and went above the call of duty. Thanks!"
"This review is not about the quality of work that is done at this location, rather it is about making sure that consumers are aware. Brought a car in to check for a flat, rotate and balance the tires and asked for a brake evaluation. All was going OK at first - got the call from Eli Remas the store manager who explained that they did not find any issues with the tires. He then said that the front brakes are OK but he recommends to do the rear brakes. The pads are close to requiring replacement and he quoted $660.00. This seemed very high to me for replacing rear pads so I asked Eli if the quote includes replacing the rotors or resurfacing them. Eli explained that not only is he including new rotors but he is also offering to flush the brake fluid because they tested for metal content in the brake fluid and it was slightly high. I asked Eli if the existing rotors can't be resurfaced? His response was the they can be. He then continued to explain to me that there are two types of rotors, solid and vented. He elaborated that vented rotors tend to last longer than solid rotors and that it is not unusual to need to replace rotors. He continued by offering his opinion and that he is only suggesting what he would do for his own car. He then said that even though the rotors can be resurfaced they will wear down faster than new rotors and I will need to replace them eventually. He closed off his recitation by explaining that resurfacing the rotors will only save about $150.00. My issue with this whole interaction is that I believe that Eli has a responsibility to inform a consumer of all available options and allowing the consumer to make a decision based on all available options, not just the one that makes Toscalito more money. If I would not have asked Eli about the option to resurface the rotor, he would not have volunteered the additional information that there is an alternate preventative maintenance path to consider. in addition to this, I am left wondering how many people know that having slightly high metal content in their brake line doesn't cause a safety issue. If the brake fluid showed indication of water contamination or signs that it overheated, then is it is needed. Otherwise, the shop might as well be selling you a bridge to tow behind your car. This car only has 83k miles on it. The brake fluid did not require flushing and Eli did not indicate that this was an option - rather, he positioned it in such a way that I was convinced that the fluid is dirty and should be replaced. This car is driven by my daughter. I asked her how should would have handled it if I was not involved in the conversation with Eli. She quickly said that she would have had not clue that would lead her to ask Eli for any other alternatives to the original estimate and that she would have authorized the work. I am left to conclude that this is the way that Tosacalito Tire of Terra Linda regularly conducts itself and there are likely many many people that visit this shop every week that authorize work without being fully informed of their options. I declined the offer to repair the brakes. I offered to pay for the inspection any extra work that Tosacalito performed to evaluate the condition of the brakes. Eli declined my offer and we were only charged $30 for the tire balance and rotation."
"These guys will rip you off if you dont know about cars. They were milking my family for years before I found out what was going on. Dont do it"
